Cambridge Families Enjoy Special Visit to Sedgwick Museum

A young boy and girl are placing paper butterflies on a colourful display filled with origami butterflies, centred around a sign that reads: "How can you help your local invertebrates?"

Local families enjoyed an exclusive visit to the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences earlier this month.

Working in partnership with University of Cambridge Museums, we offered families that we work with special access to this museum during the school summer holidays.

During the visit, children engaged in special hands-on activities while also exploring some of the museum’s fascinating objects. Everyone went home with a free goody bag!

This trip, funded by Cambridge City Council, was aimed specifically at families who wouldn’t normally get the chance to explore a museum.

The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, founded in 1728, is the oldest of the University of Cambridge Museums. Since then, the collection has grown from about 10,000 fossils, minerals and rocks, to at least two million. The museum’s collections range across all aspects of the Earth Sciences, with substantial scientific and cultural value, and active acquisition through research.

A huge thank you to University of Cambridge Museums and Cambridge City Council for sharing this opportunity with us. The families had a wonderful time!
